Thierry Le Baler

Biography

Thierry Le Baler Bio

Thierry Le Baler’s paintings give a new perspective on the Modern landscape.  He is influenced by the Nabis, a group of young avant-garde Parisian artists, who in the 1890s developed a decorative and Synthetist style - a simplified painting style in which lines, forms and planes of flat color were seen as having the power to evoke an emotional and spiritual, response in the viewer. Le Baler’s canvases are extremely smooth and clean. He flirts with the decorative Baroque, and often integrates some natural design, such as a motif of flowers or leaves. His paintings are a study in color. He often repeats the same landscape a number of times with different palettes, exploring mood, tone, and emotion.

The influences on Le Baler’s painting extend beyond the aesthetic. The term 'Nabi' is Hebrew for 'prophet', and was seen by members of the Nabis painters as evocative of something esoteric and mystical. The young Nabi artists saw themselves as transforming modern art, and were closely allied to the symbolist movement in literature and theatre. Along those lines, Le Baler pursues the creation of an image with all of his senses. He might be inspired by a particular shape or motif, a person he met, or by something he wrote in his journal. His writing aids in the approach and understanding of a particular idea, and his influences serve to anchor the creation of a work.

Thierry Le Baler studied at the Fine Art School of Quimper and Bordeaux. He received top honors in Eighty Magazine No23 (now Ninety Magazine), an essential reference in contemporary (French) art. For a number of years he illustrated the calendars of well-known designer Sonia Rykiel.
